A fun (for me) summary of some of the art I’ve drawn for the comic this year. I often work harder on the backgrounds than I do on the characters themselves. I started the year off slowly with a random comic that attempted to be funny. I’m a storyteller and not a joke writer, so I know my humor is lame, but I try to make it up with some fun settings. I am at my best when I’m telling a story and the “Taking On New York” (T.O.N.Y.) trek is a fun, but overwhelming adventure to write and draw.

So most of what you see above comes from the T.O.N.Y. pages. Bud in front of the Chicago Stadium with a crowd of people behind him (first row, center) was a great learning experience in discovering tools in Clip Studio Paint to help me create a bunch of people without having to draw them individually. The lightning that Jeff/Thor is creating with his hammer in the middle of the page was a lot of fun too. The expression on the cockroach’s face and Robyn’s pose in addition to the lighting effects really made that frame challenging and time consuming but the results speak for itself. The bottom left frame of Bud walking through the thick bush of a jungle turned out well with the layers of trees, leaves, and the sunset colors. The van in front of some New York buildings took freaking forever to draw. Note the NYC skyline reflected in the van’s windshield.

It’s not the end of the comic, but most certainly the end of 2022! Enjoy a little Beatles as you brace yourself for 2023!
