Bungle in the Jungle Cover Updated
Way, way back in 2014, I started a story called “Bungle in the Jungle” wherein the gang gets hired to play a gig in a small bar in Wisconsin. To save money, Jeff convinces everyone to camp out instead of staying in a hotel, which they could not afford anyway. I got the story started and within a few posts realized I had a better idea. “Bungle in the Jungle” became “Hemp Island.” The stories are rather similar except one takes place in a remote campground in Wisconsin, and the other takes place on a remote island in the South Pacific. Jeff even burns up everyone’s clothes in both versions using a flare gun.
It was while drawing this cover in 2014 with everyone in loincloths (except Robyn, oh yeah) that the idea of taking the story to an island hit me. The island version of the story flowed much better too. You’re not really that far away from civilization in Wisconsin. Well, some would argue that point, but I digress.
You may have noticed that I’m updating a LOT of older drawings. I’m doing it for two reasons. One, it helps keep me focused on drawing. And two, I have been planning for a long time now to create a 12″ x 12″ hardcover, coffee-table style book of selected 1977 comics and drawings. So, I have been going through the archives and picking out the cream-of-the-crop comics to update so they may be included in this book. This book will not see the light of day until the end of 2024 as I have a TON of comics to update.
New page next week for “Taking On New York,” but I thought I would share this updated cover with you all, especially all you Robyn fans. In the meantime rock out ever so slightly with Jethro Tull’s “Bungle in the Jungle” from their 1974 “War Child” album.
Perhaps if they had used *this* picture as their album cover…
Would have sold millions…. 🙂
Remember the pre-“Saturday Night Fever” Travolta album? The teens who bought it threw the album away and pinned the cover to their walls.
and that’s alright by me 🙂
I wonder how many people were completely stunned when they liked this tune and then bought the album, or one of their others ? I always preferred ‘skating away’ over bungle and some of the other tracks were better as well.
I pretty much gave up on Jethro Tull after “Aqualung.” There were a few songs here and there that caught my attention, but nothing on the level of “Aqualung” and the albums prior to that. I picked up “Thick as a Brick” and gave up on it. My short attention span at age 15 was not going to sit through 20 minute long tracks. When they did the same thing for “A Passion Play” I swore off Tull for good.
Also, there’s this quote from Anderson: “[He] chose to play bass on the rest of the album [Stormwatch]… saying “It was no big deal — anybody can play the bass. It’s only four strings after all!” WHAT?! As a bass player, I more than resent the comment, even though I know it is said with tongue partially in his cheek. But still… come on.
I’m a prog rock fan. I’m not bothered by 20 minute tracks. As far as I’m concerned it was his best stuff……..
Yeah, I blame my ADHD on that. It’s why I wasn’t a fan of Led Zeppelin in concert where some of their songs would go on for 20 minutes with Page’s droning guitar solos. My brain can’t slow down long enough for the really long, progressive rock tracks.
Never had the chance to see Zep live and from what I’ve seen on youtube that’s not necessarily a bad thing, their live performances seem to be quite different from the albums, for some bands it’s the opposite and the live ‘extended’ versions are so much better they have to be felt to be appreciated but something seems to be missing from a lot of Zeppelin live shows. They’re not bad, oh no, but they just seem to be ‘missing a layer’ if that makes sense. The Page and Plant ‘Unledded’ live poerfomance on the other hand is a masterpiece. You just never know.
I had a little fun with one cover of a Zeppelin tune, the Program Director hated it from the minute it was first played after it arrived in the mail, remember that ? no downloads, just new ‘promo not for sale’ 45’s, albums and later CD’s in the mail.
I, on the other hand, took a strange liking to it (probably to spite him)and slipped it into a late night show with it rapidly becoming a local hit 🙂
The kids calling into the request lines thought it was a brand new song, until someone finally played it back-to-back with the original and even then a few complained that the cover had already been covered o.O
There was a very early hip-hop/rap version that came out but it never got any airplay that I was aware of, it was that bad and I’m not looking for it now.
This one on the other hand was kind of catchy and the band won a lot of awards for their work, pity they broke up too soon.

Oddly enough, Aqualung is one of my least favourite Tull tunes.
I liked the entire ‘Songs From the Wood’ album, partiularly Velvet Green, Hunting Girl and especially the Whistler.
Others like Cold Wind From Valhalla, Sleeping With the Dog, Dun Ringill and The Mouse Police Never Sleeps as well as Heavy Horses and a lot of others are in my mp3 library as well.
I wish I’d had the chace to see them live but there’s always youtube for that 🙂
As usual, I rant about a group before I check my facts. “Crest of a Knave” is actually a good album by Tull. I had completely forgotten about this album from 1987. It returned to a harder rock sound, which is what I like. But, I will stand on my opinion of stuff from 1972 to 1987 is mostly not my style.
That look Robyn’s sporting reminds me of a summer time from that era…

Did Loraine flatulence kill the fish and other water creatures. At least Robyn is safe from having a candiru (tiny cat fish) getting lodged in her urithria. Painful surgery is needed to remove them. Depending on where the jungle is Loraine could have driven away hippopotamus, crocodiles, anaconda, boas, giant soft shell turtles, poisonous frogs, man eating catfish like the goonch of India or piraiba, of Brazil, piranhas, African tiger fish Goliath tiger fish imagine 100 pound piranha. Electric catfish (Africa) eels really related to knife fish (Brazil) oh fresh water crabs feel the pinch, leeches sawfish ,sharks and sting rays. Wonder who or is chasing Bud big cat lion, leopard panther or tiger, maybe wolves cape hunting dogs, Indian red dogs, hyenas even bears. Don’t forget killer bees, poisonous beetles, caterpillars, spiders, scorpions and snakes. But worse are the disease carrying flies and mosquitos. Then again maybe they are remaking one million BC too bad Bud wasn’t Buddet then he could Racqal Walch in a bikini along with Lorraine and Robyn. But it could wild kingdom and either the mystic frog or Stan Brock are out to tag him. Jethro Tulls war child not a bad cover love the ladies hot pants on the cover have a pair like them. But if they are stuck on hemp island don’t let Jeff play with a flare gun hence saving clothes and supplies. For if you don’t it’s going to be unpleasent being naked and stinky scare away would be rescuers.
Gordon Lightfoot died on Sunday April 30 he was so handsome in the 1970s and I miss him. At least he left care free highway, rainy day people, sundown, if you could read my mind copied by stars 54 in the 1998 movie studio 54 and the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Remembering the November sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald built in Cleveland 1958 and sank in Lake Superior 1975 carrying iron ore and the bell rang 29 times for the crew. They are great highway driving songs well at least plan 9 are not out in Lake Superior sailoring aboard a great lakes freighter. Or the old whale backs freighters (call so by a round broad holds instead of more angler ones on other ships) gone by 1975. Fabulous surf but never alone and with a wet or better dry suit Lake Superior is always cold even in summer due to having the greatest surface area of any lake and more volume than all the rest of the great lakes combine. Only lake Baikal in Russia and lake Tanayanka in Africa have more volume. It’s hard when musicians and kindly neighbors die at least you here.
They rang the bells in Detroit again, 30 this time, adding one for Gordon, a nice touch.
