It is rare that I can take on a current event in the comic, as well, it’s in 1977… but when our friends from “Lost” stumbled into 1977 this week… they were asking for this.
🙂
The title of the comic is not a song nor is it gibberish. Hints: Look at the title of the last episode of “Lost” and look up it’s meaning. Then, you will be headed in the right direction for translating the title of this comic. I’ll update it after a while, but I often let the cat out of the bag too early, so have some fun guessing what the title means. (And I’m hoping the translation dictionary I used was accurate!)
Back to regular 1977 on Monday. Have a good weekend. Please buy a book or subscribe, I’m getting ready for the conventions and the cash flow would be handy. Thanks everyone who’s supported so far, too!
UPDATE: Ta-Da! Someone figured out that the comic title is Hindi for “Get Lost!” I did this because the episode of Lost this week was called “Namaste” which I understand to be some sort of Hindi greeting, or “bow to you.” In my smart-ass tradition, Jeff is telling the Lost gang to “get lost” by sending them to the short-tempered Robyn’s room. By the way, the Time Portal was the first door on the left.
BTW: finding the Romanized spelling of Hindi is NOT easy.
BTW #2: Bud is referring to “McMillan & Wife” a TV “NBC Mystery Movie” series that featured “Columbo” and “McCloud”
B-rilliant! Well! Done! Dud- I mean, man…
ont watch lost so i thought dharma was referring to donald “buck” dharma of B.O.C they were so badass they came here not too long ago and still rocked the house
heh its so hard to write in the dark i meant to say i dont watch….
Thanks Jim! Yeah, I’m from the Midwest and “duudddeee…” just never caught on here.
RE: 11 in 1977 – Writing in the dark is not easy… But, BOC does still rock and sorry that it’s not about him. 🙂
“go to hell”? really? or were you going for “get lost”?
Okay! We have a winner! Yes, it’s “Get Lost!”
I hope it doesn’t mean “go to hell” or I’m gonna piss off all three of my Hindu readers…
I asked one of the Indian girls at my work that speaks fluent Hindi about the title of your comic. Needless to say, she laughed.
Yeah, BOC are immortal, I think. I’ve seen ’em three times in over 25 years, and whether they’re in a packed stadium or a college bar, they still rawk like stoner gods. Honestly, I don’t think anything they’ve released from the studio holds a votive candle to them live. Close to 40 years or so, and they’re still great live. That’s quite an achievement!
RE: Dante – Thank you for that! When you use these on-line dictionary or translation sites, you wonder if you’re getting something obscene or legitimate.
I use to do corporate sales videos and we did this one about manufacturing vacuum tubes. In the script it talks about “exciting” the tubes, which means the gases inside are heated and somehow made “active” or something. In the Chinese translation, the translator we hired said that the tubes were being “masturbated” and all the Chinese representatives got up and left the meeting at that point. We all were a bit stunned until THEIR translator explained the goof. Needless to say we fired and got our money back from our script translator.
Well done, good sir, well done! I thought you’d like to know where they landed. Great comic! 🙂
Duuuuude!
nobody mentions the posters?! sweeeeet
I was going to be quiet until SOMEONE noticed the freakin’ Dark Side of the Moon poster in the background! I use to do a lot of those, but then I thought I’d run into some copyright crap if I did it all the time. So I haven’t done one in some time, so I popped it in.
Thanks for noticing! I stick all types of crap into these things sometimes… 🙂
Isn’t putting in a product free advertising? As long as you are not making money directly off of the sell of the product. But that is just my opinion as INAL.
One of the great “legal” loopholes of webcomics is that we do not DIRECTLY make money with the comics themselves. You are free to read this comic, thus including a copyrighted image is fair use in a parody situation. Now, if I were to put this comic on a t-shirt and sell it (with the poster still in the frame), then someone would have the right to put a “cease & desist” order on my butt.
I just felt I was doing too many posters and this would attrack the wrong kind of attention from a legal standpoint, so I’ve toned it down. Besides, the characters and stories have improved a lot in the last year and I don’t need as many gimmicks.
There is a lot you can get away with in parody, but when an artist sells that parody, well the lines quickly get very thin and gray indeed.
