And Jeff learns another lesson in life… lie. Okay, not all the time… only when it counts. 🙂
BTW… the Bi-Cotton Rod is what I call a generic Q-Tip. Jeff’s dad created it and is filthy rich… for those of you not quite up to speed with 1977’s back story.
Today’s comic title is one of those songs that builds on you with each listen. I’m a big fan of any Rolling Stones material up to “Sticky Fingers” After that, not so much. Their early stuff is really experimental and certainly edgier than their later stuff. Disco Stones sucked. Period. But “You Can’t Always…” appeared on 1968’s “Let It Bleed” album that also featured the monumental “Gimme Shelter” which is just a damn good song. And it fits today’s comic perfectly as Jeff certainly is NOT getting what he wanted.
Oh, HEY!! I’m a guest artist over at “I’m Not Bob” today!! I take a poke at the comic’s title, so go check it out! Fun comic for you to read three times a week too! Go. Now. Click. Here. Thank you!
🙂
I got to hand it to you man. This might be the best artistic strip of yours. Congrats.
The song was also featured as the recessional hymn in the funeral scene in the movie “The Big Chill”.
Morning, Captain! This strip was, at first, very simple to draw. I only have to do the girl once, then a close-up of Jeff, then back to the long shot. BUT… I wanted to get the atmosphere of those darkly lit bars without making the characters too dark themselves. We gotta see that 70s outfit on the girl for sure.
What was hard was the damn glasses. I wanted them transparent, thus started the time consuming portion of the strip. I had it drawn and inked in about 90 minutes, but the coloring and shading in PhotoShop took longer.
The only cheating I did was to leave off the handle on Jeff’s beer mug. I leave off stuff that clutters up a drawing, and the handle was not necessary to the comic, so I left it out.
Kevin Costner was also in the Big Chill as the dead body in the beginning, but they ended up cutting out his face shots, so we never see Kevin, even though that’s his body and hands, etc. I love trivia like that. I can’t remember where I parked my car, but I can remember shit like that!
🙂
Speaking of trivia, did you mean to make the girl look like that spooky ’70s icon, Vampirella? 🙂
(Dad loved Vampirella; when he moved out in ’78, I acquired a four-foot stack of B&W horror mags, most of them issues of Vampirella, so she’s a big part of my ’70s memories, too. Oh, yeah – Dad also used to sing the refrain from “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” whenever my sister or I wanted something that we weren’t gonna get. When it comes down to that classic character question “Beatles or Stones,” Dad’s definitly a Stones guy… and I answer “Judas Priest.”)
BTW, have you heard the Stones’ most recent album, A Bigger Bang? It’s the best thing they’ve released since Goat’s Head Soup in ’72.
RE: satyrblade – No, but that would have been funny too… I was just going for that typical woman you’d see in a bar in the 70s (or today) who’s just looking for a good time, and a guy with money.
I WILL be doing one as well with a typical 70s dude with the big collar shirt unbuttoned to his navel with chains in a short bit (not tomorrow). So, equal time for all the bar flies out there…
Great comic today man! Very funny. I love the Stones too. Gimmie Shelter is probably my favorite song by them. I still run into people who have no idea what song that is. I’m like, you know, the song you hear in every Martin Scorsese film!
And thank you very much for the guest comic you did for me. Very, very funny. 🙂
No problem, Rob. You may be too young to remember or seen this, but when I hear the name Rob, I think of Mary Tyler Moore as Laura Petrie on the old Dick Van Dyke show going “Ooooh, Rob!” Classic stuff.
RE: Bryon not finding his car… I’m the same way. If my wife sends me to the store, she better give me list or e-mail it to me. Yet, I can remember the craziest shit like in the film ‘Silent Running’, the external shots (of Saturn) were borrowed from ‘2001: A Space Oddyssey’ that didn’t use them because Kubrik needed to make an already long movie shorter and moved the “It’s full of stars!” monolith to a point near Jupiter.
Crap… just realized I horked your name, Byron.
This is one of my favorites so far. It’s really good. I also dig the Stones song for it, too.
RE: lord beavis – SOOO many people call me Bryon that I don’t even notice anymore. But thank you for noticing and correcting yourself! A shiny new dime is on it’s way to you… I think…
🙂
That’s GREAT 2001 trivia I didn’t know! How cool! That’s tucked away. My wife’s birthday… nope.
😀
If someone asks you if you’re a god…
RE: Kevin – That’s so funny you mention that as that’s exactly what I said when my 12 year old read this comic. Great minds….
😀
