Don’t laugh, but today’s title, besides being a popular expression, is also a very humorous ABBA song… okay, I’ll wait for you to stop laughing… Yes, ABBA. I know, I’m a rocker and ABBA and I should not mix, but I love ’em. Don’t ask why, but I generally get my Judist Judas Priest albums out after listening to ABBA… just to cleanse my soul I guess!

Rob Halford (lead singer of Judas Priest) came out of the closet about ten years ago, to a huge swell of support from the heavy metal community. Good for him!

Ah, Judas Priest! First heard “Green Manalishi” from Unleashed in the East in 1979, and it leveled my world. That album was one of the first I bought with my own money. I’d already been a fan of Kiss, Heart and Nugent(*), but Priest, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, AC-DC and Zepplin (all of whom I discovered that year, along with The Ramones, Bruce Springsteen, Rush and more, courtesy of 105 FM and DC101 in Northern Virginia) rocked my world to its foundations.
Of the lot of them, Priest and Sabbath remain my favorites. I confess that Sabbath has aged better than Priest to my ears, but I still adore both bands. RAWK!
Oh, and I recall seeing a country girl similar to yours while refueling on a trip through Tennessee. We were pumping up the van when a pickup filled with teens drove up and unloaded. One of ’em was a tall, hot blonde, barefoot with cut-offs and, as I recall, a sleeveless T-shirt. I deeply envied whomever got to drive HER around, and remember her fondly almost 15 years later.

On a lighter note, Heart, Prisim and BTO threw the first live concert I ever saw, back in 1977 or ’78. That was also the first time I smelled pot. Let’s hear it for the ’70s!

RE Kevin: Yeah, but he’s 11 years old and has to catch a damn bus to like another state as we live really far west of Chicago and the new middle school isn’t ready until next year. My wife and I drew straws, and since she birthed all the boys, I’m the one that gets up early!

Heart and BTO together… wow, I missed that one! I love both those bands.
My oldest sister introduced me to pot in the summer of ’73… listening to “We’re An American Band” while stoned was pretty cool. Discovered the true “Dark Side of the Moon” that summer too! 🙂
But, my first “smelling” of pot was my very first concert in 1974… it was George Harrison on his only USA tour and we were packed into the old Chicago Stadium where the Bulls and Black Hawks use to play and the place was FULL of pot… the pidgeons were flying upside down after the concert.

FYI, Byron, Yngwie Malmsteen has conclusively demonstrated that ABBA and rock do mix by recording a heavy metal cover of “Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie!”
