Tonight, on a very special 1977 the Comic…
Bull. But I really liked this one, I even took out the “joke” in the third panel. It originally had Robyn in the background running with her hair still on fire. It did several things I think to detract from the comic. One, it really made Lorraine out an idiot, and she’s not really stupid but oblivious sometimes. Two, it also took away from Lorraine’s moment of realizing she’s adopted. So, I like this one. The laughs return on Wednesday, so never fear, I’m not going all serious on you.
I actually introduced this idea of Lorraine being adopted two years ago. At that point Lorraine mis-read adopt for adept, and couldn’t figure out why her Mom was pointing out that she was, in fact, adept. I actually didn’t like that comic all that much, because it too emphasized Lorraine as a simpleton, and she’s not. She’s savvy in certain areas, but you’ll find that out here soon enough.
A little more Joe Cocker. This time pulling from his “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” live album. A great song that goes along with today’s comic nicely, even though it’s about a guy getting a letter from his “baby” where she states she’s missing him. The original song by the Box Tops clocked in at a brisk two minutes. Pretty standard for 60s radio songs. Short songs equal more time for talk and commercials. Mostly commercials.

oohhh woow
“Short songs equal more time for talk and commercials. Mostly commercials.”
You got that right!
I hear that! Hate commercials.
You did right to leave out Robyn with her hair on fire (although, really, who can get enough hair on fire stuff?) Nice setup!
Thanks! Yeah, I thought, why not let a serious moment go by. The sitcom writer in me wanted to make a joke, but I resisted for once.
BAM! there is a dose of reality to hit ya in the face!
Oh yeah. Can you imagine? Would explain a few things in my family actually…
🙂
Yeah! I like it when you drop those bombshells on us, Byron!
As much as I like hair-fires, I think you made the right call. 🙂
I hear you… the joker in me wanted Robyn in there in the worst way… but this is better.
🙂
Seconded, thirded and fourthed. Well done!
Thank you my dear! 🙂
Also, LOVE the eyes!
YES! Let’s hear it for the artist who finally bit the bullet and started drawing “real” eyes on the lady folks in 1977. Now… to break the men’s eyes…
🙂
Why was her eyes blue but now they are brown?
Well, I’ve finally made the cross over from “cartoon” eyes, with only blue pupils, to a more realistic look and Lorraine would not have blue eyes in my opinion. So, this is what I’m gonna draw until I decide to change them again…
I’m that way sometimes… 🙂
Haha I guess brown eyes do look more real on her.
Hey Bryon! just started reading the new story and i’m liking it!
Thank you very much! I’m hoping folks relate to it, especially in these really screwed up economic times we’re in. I know my boys have had a helluva time finding decent jobs that last more than a few months (seasonal stuff).
Well, THAT’S one way to start off the week!
Look behind the socks; there’s another letter stating her real father is the fire-breathing lizard!!!
Poco as her father… hmmm… could be done I bet!
🙂
