INCOMING! You’ve heard of a flying V, now you having a flying bass. Bud to rescue… maybe.
“Sledgehammer” is a great tune done in concert by BTO. Fred can just roar like few can and he’s in great form on this song. Randy handles the quiet parts just fine, but it’s the power chords and Fred’s bellowing voice that rocks your spine. BTO has made up for all the Gordon Lightfoots and Anne Murrays that have dribbled across the border from Canada. And for you Peter Gabriel fans, I’ve included his version too, as I was informed NO ONE knows the BTO version. So I’ll give you both! Enjoy!
Thør haz a hammer, Jeff has an axe … 😉 😀
Assuming, of course, it’s Jeff & not Bud. That does appear to be a bass … A musician would have to be pretty desperate to sling their own instrument. Better to use someone else’s and play innocent, beg for forgiveness, or otherwise try to weasel out of the consequences after the fact.
Funny thing about Mr. Half-beard there … I never really did get his type. If a gal like Lorraine had just lit my goat on fire, and apologized for it, I’d have offered her the opportunity to make it up to me, and promised her a sweet return on her investment. Make love, not war. And all that. 😛
Check the header image… it’s Bud’s bass alright. No, Jeff would never toss his axe at someone, but Bud (and I) are a bit, well, crazy, and do things on impulse sometimes.
I’m with you, make love not war was always a motto I agreed with. But, some characters don’t believe in that and their fuse is easily lit… literally this time.
😛
If the guitar is being thrown instead of swung or jabbed, that indicates to me that Bud is far enough away to justify this method of using his guitar as a weapon. If such is the case, who’s tapping the bearded man and saying “Excuse Me”. I doubt its any of our heroes as Bud would not want to throw his guitar with them in the line of fire. Another possibility: Robyn or Jeff tapped Bearded Man on the shoulder so he’d turn around to get smacked in the face and Bud said “Excuse me” to THEM so that they’d get out of his way. But then the word balloon should be drawn higher and the point longer to indicate the voice coming from a greater distance.
“You’re not thinking fourth dimensionally…”
“Yeah, I have a problem with that…”
In cartoonland, the explosion of lines separates the object and/or person from the background for dramatic effect. Indeed, Bud could be right behind it jabbing it at the guy, or it could have been thrown. If so, yes, Jeff would distract the guy while Bud tosses the guitar.
You will find out in Friday’s comic. 🙂
Speaking of 4th dimensional cartoonland poetic licensing … I wish to lodge a comment with the management. Respectfully.
The word balloon at the bottom of panel #1 is placed a bit too much toward the Lorraine and could, perhaps, be adjusted strategically toward stage right of the frame. Just seems like a near-criminal cover-up of a choice bits of teh fanservice.
That is all. Thank you! 😉 😛
Stage left. Ugh! Stage LEFT! Less coverage … not more! Please …?
Got it… cover the guy’s crotch, not Lorraine’s. It shall be done!
😛
Yes! Exactly like that! 😛 😛 😛 Even room left over to leave a small package out for the ladies. 😉
Been wanting to do this for a while now … so folks have a chance to understand what this little bit of conversation is all about:

Move the mouse cursor over the image for comparison. Enjoy! 🙂 😎
Nice! You can see how I clean up perspectives sometimes on character’s hands or body positions. The colors make a HUGE difference and I’m glad I stuck to that format. I like putting up the pencils for a while then updating with the inks later on. Gives everyone a chance to see the before and after. Plus, I think my pencils rock most times. Just saying…
😛
Sorry but Sledgehammer will always in my mind be associated with Peter Gabriel.
Indeed, Peter’s is the more famous and popular song for sure… but for ME “Sledgehammer” is pure Bachman-Turner Overdrive. This song was rotated heavily back in the day on FM AOR stations, as were most of the songs on “Not Fragile”. I miss those days of discovering new stuff on radio instead of being spoon fed the same hits over and over these days.
That’s what Corporate America wants us to hear, and I shall fight it until the day I die. Did you know that in 1960 there were 50, yes FIFTY, major media outlets. Now there are SIX… only 6. Six companies are feeding you what they want you to know and hear. Stand up folks, we’re losing our rights here and we don’t even know it.
Man, the soapbox came out early today… sorry about that.
😛
The Bearman gets a very large cookie for that comment. Yay for someone who understands the true heart of rock and roll 😀
As long as it isn’t oatmeal raisen.
Hang on a moment – there are four machine heads on that headstock, but surely Bud isn’t the bass-battering type…hmm…
Bud’s a romantic. No sacrifice is too great for a damsel in distress.
FINALLY!! Someone gets it! YES! A shiny new dime for you!
😛
Thanks! But if possible I’d rather have an old Mercury dime.
I’m sure you have gotten into more than your share of trouble trying to save the damsel in distress. I know I have. You’d think we’d learn.
bass to the face, that’s gonna adjust your dental work.
Ever even drop a guitar on your foot? Solid little bastards and I’m sure would wake you up.
😛
Since I seem to be single-handedly cluttering up the comments today, might as well go for one more:
El Kabong! Learning how to play the kabonger is easy for Senorita Rita … or is that Wilma moonlighting ..?
Quick Draw McGraw was my first cartoon love. Watched it as a wee-lad and always loved his “Hooooollld on, thar…”. The opening/end credits with the stagecoach was a ton of fun. And El Kabong was a fabulous take off on Zorro (which I also watched with the great Guy Williams as Zorro).
And yeah, Hanna Barbera’s character development was rather shallow at times and that is simply a blue-haired Wilma. Ah, but who am I to complain, my characters follow their lead… big time.
😛
Nice of you to give a nod to Gabriel Byron, but as much as I like & admire him, “Sledgehammer” was BTO’s first, and sonically, there’s no way Gabriel comes anywhere close. While I’m sure that Bud’s (SG, EB-3?) will get the job done, too bad he’s not playin’ something with a little more heft to it like a Ricky, Precision, or Thunderbird!
I’d give my left nut for a Rickenbacker 4003 bass and indeed they have way more “heft” to them then the EB-0 or SG bass. Fender is fightin’ words in my word. Can’t stand them. Just me. I know everyone and their son plays the damn things but I dislike them. Just a personal thing. Some of the crowds I hung with were very judgmental and if you didn’t have a Fender you were just weird. Also, I hate going with the “majority” or “popular” choice in stuff. Seems too easy.
Damn straight about BTO’s “Sledgehammer” knocking Gabriel’s socks off when cranked to 11. Great riffs.
🙂
For those of you who grew up during the early ’60s, El Kabong strikes again!
“OLAY!!!” *KA-BONG!!!*
😛
I’lllllll do the thinin’ around here, Baba-boy. 😀
Aww, I wanted to be the first to make an El Kabong reference. 😀
Seems more of us remember Quick Draw McGraw then I would have guessed. Hmmm… this may give me ideas.
Bud use to hallucinate Hanna-Barbera characters when he got high, I may have to bring those back.
😛
El Kabong Strikes Again! 🙂

Man, it would be a bit funny to see a Quickdraw McGraw/ El Kabong reference given the time line. 😀
Also, I was hoping for any other Heavy metal references to flying bass in the late 70s ?
Wow, BTO Sledgehammer, Thanks
I am a big fan of the webcomic alliance and the podcast. I really enjoyed crawling through your archives. Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks, man! I’m glad that not only can I perhaps pass along some of my knowledge via the podcast, but I can also entertain you here at the comic! You made my day! Shiny new dime for you!
😛
