Doing this one in B&W would have been a sin. And also hard as hell. It would have taken a crap-load of gray tones to accomplish the same thing as about 10 colors. Maybe not, but that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.
I first came up with Robyn’s storyline back in July. Laughed my ass off at the thought of her being a cake-girl at stag parties. Then I wrote today’s comic and started a sketch of Robyn getting in the cake while showing a fair amount of skin, but still being a tease of sorts. I think tease shots are more appealing than in-your-face nudity. Anyway, you observant readers will remember this pose from a sneak-peek I did of Lorraine and Robyn in some pencil sketches (Lorraine’s was more full frontal and is coming up). July, folks. I’ve been waiting a long time to do this one. And normally I’m impatient!
Ah, the Chevy Van. How many kids did our generation spawn while listening to Styx or REO on the cassette player and banging our girlfriend of the week in the back of one of these mobile Motels? More than we admit I’m sure. It was nearly a contest to see how much crap one could retro-fit into the back of these monsters. Sinks, fridges, tiny beds, stereos, lamps… on and on. A home on wheels too but a bit nippy in the winter (some had plug-ins like mobile homes for heaters… gimme a break). Here’s 1977’s nod to the almighty Chevy Van. May they rust away quietly.
Dr. John. Man, what a song and what a voice. Blues, jazz, rock and rock all jammed into one guy. I never got beyond this single (it annoyed the hell out of me back in the day) but today I listen to his stuff and appreciate the talent for sure. So, just to annoy the artist once more, here’s today’s comic title!
***************************
Ah, that nipple. It’s cosmic. It’s the Cosmic Nipple! Awesome shootin’, hombre 😀
I’ll add this here… but did anyone notice that the artist did SIX FREAKIN’ COMICS THIS WEEK? !!! Plus some good ol’ naked boobs? Come on…
Compliments welcome… 🙂
Yes! And it’s awesome! Although I have a thought…see you elsewhere about it 😉
Bravo, sir! You’re drawing them faster than I can read them.
BTW…
‘Sinks, frigs, tiny beds, stereos, lamps… on and on.’ – re the second item there, I was going to say ‘I think you mean *fridges*’, but then again, in the classical American vernacular (and given the nature of the vehicle) that’s not actually a misspelling there at all…muhahahaha…
Ah, shoot me… did you know what I was talking about? There you go…
No, it should be fridges not frigs, which rhymes with twig. 🙂
What? You’re not looking at Robyn to skip over the typo? Come on… 😛
My multicultural education, let me show you it 😛
Nice job! You sat on a good one for that long?
Yeah, Dr. John! Saw him in the late 80’s with the Dead in Oakland for a Mardi Gras show at the Kaiser. Good times.
Lovin’ the comic.
Mardi Gras in its prime must have been a gas. As an ex-drinker/party-all-night guy, Mardi Gras was right up my alley.
Thanks for the compliment! It helps on a Friday!
Great stuff! The art on your strip is great and I look forward to checking back!
Thanks for the compliment. Been by your comic as well.
A small suggestion… your comment was spammed because of your generic comment “I look forward to checking back!” which seems to be the standard spam comment line. Just saying…
🙂
a little off topic for this although robins nipple shot is fantastic and the story is funny as hell.
i just wanted to say i went to see RUSH last night in
san antonio tx and it was AWESOME! keep up the good work
Ah, concert updates are allowed, man. No problem! Rush, eh? They allowed them out of Canada and into Texas? Good times indeed…
🙂
Texas: where you can buy handguns at 7-11s (this still true?) and where people do *not* stop for red lights (at least in Houston). Ah, Houston! Home of NASA and the best damn strip clubs in the world. Yes sir… good times… good times.
🙂
Ah the venerble chevy van… While I never had one, it seems like every band I was ever in had a member, sound & light techie, or roadie that did. How could you resist not doin’ Sammy Johns’ “Chevy Van” Byron? (Just kidding… I’m sure that most of the other 1977 fan club would gladly shoot me for suggesting that, but I hafta admit to a soft spot for most of that 70’s “Pablum Rock” like Sammy Johns, Bread, Lobo, Gary Wright, Al Stewart, etc…. It used to bemuse my friends to no end – I was sometimes Black Sabbath & Led Zeppelin by day, America, 10CC & Ambrosia by night…).
You and I have commented before the variety of tunes we listen too… many folks here shudder that I can even listen ABBA (Dancing Queen still gets cranked to this date). I like Country Rock too. Hey, it’s up to the individual. I have Lobo’s first album and a couple of his singles. And Bread’s “If” is a bit haunting, if not sappy.
Just now in my play list Sabbath’s “Paranoid” was followed up with Pablo Cruise’s “Worlds Away” Opposite spectrum songs but I cranked them both.
And curse you for mentioning that damn “Chevy Van” song as it drives me nuts. Mostly as the Chicago stations played the hell out of it. That and “Wildfire” by that freakin’ Michael Murphey was played every 10 minutes it seems. Ugh. Some good songs can get ruined by repetition on AM radio back in the day, and those two are near the top of my list.
🙂
Ever hear the U2 cover of Dancing Queen? Its surreal to say the least.
Speaking of 10cc, an appropriate quote from their Worst Band in the World:
“Never seen the van, leave it to the roadies/Never met the roadies, leave ’em in the van…” 😀
Late to the show again … my life, such as it is.
But, what a glorious Robyn strip to click into! 😀 Dang, but I recognize that pose from sketchwork back in the summer. I think I commented about martial arts & balance & posture on that. Shame it’s 1977 in the sense that those are nearly Granny Panties by today’s standards
Holy Rock N’ Roll but I wish I was there to give her step up into the cake! Wonder how she manages that, under any circumstances. But, especially in the crammed quarters of a van ????
Flexible gal, that Robyn she izzzzz … 😈
In addition to being a huge Dr. John fan, I mention now that I have quite a number of Tom Waits bootlegs that invoke the same sorts of wildness and unhinged Orleans madness.
A non-sequitor, but one I think you’ll love … it’s got a great 1977 theme plus great sound:

“Weird Al” Yankovic – CNR (tribute to Charles Nelson Reilly). It’s about three minutes of your life that you’ll never get back, assuming you only watch it once. 😉
Watch for various send-offs, such as busting on the White Stripes and an Alice Cooper-ish spin. Weird Al is utterly a God Who Walks Amongst Us. 😀
~boggles~ Just tried the link, and you’re joking, right? That video is *unwatchable*! And no, I don’t mean there was anything wrong with my internet connection 🙁
Great audio track, though 🙂
Guess I’m not getting the subtlety of communication through mere Internets text. Do you mean you’re not entertained by the style of animation ..? Or it’s not funny ..? Or that the video is technically malfunctioning ..?
I recommended it because I found it a very clever and cutting edge video production. Technically, impressed with the mash-up of illustration and photography/videography. I grew up watching Charles Nelson Reilly all over the TV. I thought it was an outstanding tribute to him, and I expect he’s laughing hysterically, both at the song and the silly video montage fit to the lyrics.
Sorry if you didn’t enjoy it. 🙁 Was just hoping to give folks a good laugh.
At least you agreed that Weird Al produced yet another amazing song. He usually has about two on every album that are just shockingly good, if absurd & silly beyond most mortal comprehension.
Ah, sorry ’bout that. I meant I found it unwatchable due to the presence of ~spits~ animation. Eww eww eww and eww. Animation is something I’ve despised since earliest childhood when a well-meaning relative inflicted some Disney on me 🙁
There are very, very few animated things that don’t batter my squick spot, but it’s a very short list – mostly consisting of DangerMouse, Futurama, the video for Tom Petty’s Running Down a Dream, and…er, that’s pretty much it. And for the record, I feel the same way about distorted-face manga. And the vast majority of inferior comix artists.
Weird Al OTOH we can *definitely* agree on! There are so very many shite-arse wannabe parodists in the world, and then there’s Weird Al, who’s a paragon of style, grace, awesome musicianship and great production values.
‘Kay … Fair enough. I embrace just about all animation & comics. A total anime junkie in addition, I do confess. Yes, I mock the shyte styles (comic, manga, etc.), but am in awe & ecstasy of the hundreds of magnificent offerings out there.
Glad we can agree on Weird Al, though. I’d hate to have to hate you … 😉
Well, while I’m at it & cluttering up this section of comments ,, might as well note that this video reminded me I have a directory full of White Stripes music & videos. Been beating the hell out of my ears under the headphonics for nearly two straight days now.
Jack White is … just jaw-droppingly amazing. Can’t say much bad about Meg, either, but Jack has just about revolutionized modern punk (for lack of a better genre to pigeonhole him into). Ears bleeding & loving it. 😀
Heh, we don’t agree on much apart from Weird Al – I find the White Stripes thoroughly meh. Currently if I want to play stuff on 11 it’s likely to be a mix of Rammstein, Butthole Surfers, 30 Seconds to Mars and Hans Zimmer film scores 😛
If this doesn’t get you 10,000 new readers, then nothing less than an atomic explosion will!
..and Dr. John is definitely good stuff (I discovered him through Dr. Teeth, the grooviest Muppet of them all).
still keepin it classy byron! as usual!
Re: Robyn in pink panties
Dear Sir,
Thank you! Oh, ThankYouThankYouThankYou!!! *slobber*
Regards,
Makkabee
So here I am going through your archives for a second time (always a good exercise!). Quick comment on the van – was that a quick nod to Chris Flick?
Also… I love how you draw vehicles!
-Denis
I’m an idiot. I just saw the comment. Beer, need more beer.
Archive diving is something I do myself… to remind me of story-lines I’ve not followed up on and the like. But I also do it to just have some fun going back and seeing how, somehow, I’ve made some sense out of the madness of this comic.
It all kinda comes together every so often, and it’s cool to revisit the old stories. Like seeing an old-friend from high school. 🙂
And yes, it was a nod toward Chris… as you found out.
