My two oldest boys were the right age to have seen and owned on video the Disney movie “Rescuers Down Under” and it was the original inspiration for this comic. But, using Google to verify I spelled the title correctly, but what did my aging blood-shot eyes behold? The original “Rescuers” movie came out in… 1977! Shit, couldn’t have planned that one better.
I toyed with a stoner reaction for Bud in the third frame, but finally just went with what you see. Probably more fitting. Stand by to touch down in Latvia on Monday and a couple weeks worth of comics visiting this scenic country!
The Byrds launched several musical careers and were better at performing Dylan songs then Dylan himself. Today’s comic title was released in early 1966 and was actually banned by some radio stations thinking it was referring to drugs when in fact it was about flying in a plane to a gig in England. Duh. The Byrds essentially created folk rock and then helped launch psychedelic rock songs with today’s comic title. David Crosby and Roger McQuinn are the two best known musicians from the Byrds.

Wow I remember seeing both of them and I’m not that old saw them on video I think. It still surprises me that there is a picture of a naked woman in it.
Another one of those Disney rumors? I’ll have to Goggle that one! 🙂
I remember looking at that. I also remember it as being the best thing about the Rescuers, LOL!
I’ll be damned… it is true! Here’s a link:

Apparently a recall and everything. I don’t recall this, but in 1999 I was not looking to buy any of the 70s Disney films anyway. 🙂
Yes, the Rescuers is not a good film at all. Typical in my opinion of the time period for Disny films that were either poorly animated cartoons or live action films with Don Knots and Harry Morgan. Ugh. Thankfully the 80s/90s brought us Little Mermaid and Lion King type films and restored my faith in Disney! That, and PIXAR!
I loved “The Rescuers” when I was a little boy. The Golden Books novelization (can you legitimately use that word to describe a Golden Book?) was one of my favorites. Besides, Bob Newheart as an action hero. WAAAY better than Mel Gibson.
Yeah, Golden Books were… well, Golden Books. They entertain they’re target market. And they’re good at getting parents to shell out the bucks for these tiny little movie recaps.
man, I thought those movies were teh shiizz when I was younger.
I havent watched them in ages, I dont want to spoil the memories :p
I agree, there are a lot of things left to our fading memories. I watch some old TV shows now and go “What they hell is that?” ruining an age old fond memory of the episode.
Distinctly as an 8 year old watching the “Lost In Space” episode called “The Keeper” (about a galactic zoo guy) and at the end of part one Dr. Smith releases “all the Keeper’s animals”. As a child I remember hundreds of animals running out the ship’s door. Today, it’s the same four really badly costumed “monsters” exiting the ship as the camera cuts to different angles. Talk about ruining a childhood memory…
🙂
wait wasn’t Latvia part of the Soviet Union?
At the time, Latvia was under Russian rules I believe.
dude you awseom bernard and bianca xD
Took me two seconds to remember those were the names of the characters! Nice memory! Or you have kids watching the movie…
