“I can’t understand why she walked like a woman but talked like a man… my Lola…” Ray Davies can be quite the wit and “Lola” is a prime example of his tongue in cheek lyrics. The other song I love is “Come Dancing” and it’s line “My sister always did…” Love it!
I’ve been wanting to use “Lola” for sometime now and finally found an opportunity with Robyn’s storyline. And, hey, you crazy readers guessing what’s inside my head is about as scary as hell. I’ve had this one lined for a while now, so I hope I’m not being too obvious! Kudos to you readers for being as warped as I am!
Getting my lines cleaner now that I have a focus on doing just pencils. One could argue my inks should be the same, but it must be a mental thing… I am a bit mental if you haven’t noticed! You’ll also notice real backgrounds. If I’m not toiling over the damn inking and colors, then I can crank some backgrounds. Note the “CK + LL” on the stall wall? I am a stinker.
Also a little nod to my friend Chris Flick who does a webcomic “Capes and Babes” and it inspired me to apply it to the cake company’s name. The Chevy Van in panel one will make another appearance soon.
Final note on “Lola”… yes, I have the original single and just the other day one of the “younger” artists I follow on Twitter never realized “Lola” was a guy. Hello? Did you miss the end of the song? Ah, youth…

I have a long way to go. I have a B&W comic I’m studying for their tones and textures they use in the background. But that one is also inked, not penciled.
Forcing myself into a B&W phase will only improve my output in the long run. I’m sure I’ll get color back sooner than later. You don’t learn new things if you’re in a rut…

How does somebody miss the end of the song where Ray says “Well I’m not the worlds most masculine man, but I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a man, and so is Lola”? I mean, I knew what that song was talking about when I was 7 years old…or maybe that says something about me. LOL. 🙂
Well, in classic Davies writing, the sentence can have two meanings… one, Lola’s a man, or two, Lola’s glad *he’s* a man. If you’re not listening, it rolls by you and you hear Lola’s glad he’s a man. But for me it was the “walked like a woman and talked like a man” that gave it away to me, and I was (am) as naive as they come.
Now, Bea Arthur had a masculine voice… whole new meaning to Golden Girl, eh?

As for the B&W – you do whatever floats yer boat Byron, you can do the strip in sepia tones for all I care, the quality & content are what it’s about, & you’re excelling there my friend. I’ve always wondered if Lou Reed’s writing “Take a Walk On the Wild Side” was fostered by “Lola”, as in him thinking to himself ” Hmmm, Ray Davies got away with it, let’s see what I can do…”

Surprising Colour is surprising!
Well, normally coloring a pencil sketch looks bad as the line contrasts aren’t there and it seems to bug me, but this one worked out okay. I’m not doing the background, but the I felt the characters needed a little more punch.
Surprise is my middle name… actually it’s Byron, but that’s another story…

Lola! No less … ;-D Dang, that’s a fantastic twist and a fantastic song. I’m seriously laughing out loud, and I should have been expecting it if anyone should have.
I had just about everything by Davies/The Kinks on vinyl prior to the mid-80s. Another top one from that era “I think I’m sophisticated ‘cos I’m living my life a good homo sapiens …” if you happen to want to work Apeman into a punchline someday. Probably just about my favorite Kinks song. Great lyrics; ripe for a comic theme in half a dozen ways.
I wore through three copies of Apeman when it first came out 🙂
Hmm, if you still have old Kinks stuff, how about A Soap Opera? Damn, I loved that album. I still get ‘Demon Alcohol’ running through my brain at odd moments, almost 40 years on…

The Kinks are due some coverage here as they came back like a storm in 1977 and rocked the world again. It’s funny, I considered the Kinks “old” in 1977 due to their 60s hits. Heh, hindsight indeed…

Ha ha! I’m 17 and sad to admit, I listened to the kinks since I was a kid on the radio (particularly this song) and I didn’t catch on until I was about 15. Love the comics, love the kinks.
