Today’s comic is based on a semi-true story from my college days. (Duh, aren’t they all?)
Here’s the back story: I was driving home, slightly loaded, and it was snowing like hell. Now, my old ’69 Chevy Caprice had posi-traction; meaning power was applied to BOTH back wheels, giving you “positive-traction.” With this type of transmission, I plowed my way through the heavy snow of northern Illinois like a pro. Getting cocky, I started taking corners like Richard Petty (NASCAR Driver) and on this one corner, the old car decided it wasn’t going to turn half-way through a right turn and I ended up in this guy’s lawn, crushing the bushes on the corner of his house. Being the idiot I was back then, I slammed it into reverse, killed my headlights, and backed it out of his yard in a hurry. I drove the rest of the way home in the dark, fearing someone would spot me! No one ever did, and in the spring I did see the guy replacing his bushes. We do silly stuff in our youth.
Welcome back Annie, the irritating 2nd grader you have to love.
Today’s comic title refers to the 1975 Bachman-Turner Overdrive album of the same name. BTO’s glory days would be over in just a few months after this album’s release, as album sales and concert ticket sales took a dive. BTO’s 15 minutes in the spotlight were up and the band broke up by the beginning of 1977. But from May of 1973 when their first album was released, until February of 1977 when their fifth and final album was released, the group released six studio albums with sales over 30 million units, had fourteen singles in the Top 100, including ten singles in the Top 40, five singles in the Top 5, and a solitary Number One song. Not bad statistics in less than four years.
One of my favorite songs off the “Head On” album is the Fred Turner penned tune called “It’s Over.” I love Fred’s gravely voice.
UPDATE:
I am, as time allows, updating the older comics on here. The fonts and word balloons I used in 2008 were just… horrible. So they’re being replaced and I’m fighting the urge to completely redraw the entire comic, but I do make changes here and there as I just can’t let them go. The original is posted below.
