I believe a certain little boy will be looking for his imaginary friend a long, long way from home. Never mess with unemployed rock musicians.
I have to admit that one of my guilty pleasures (one of many) is Europe’s “Final Countdown”. But, I’m a sucker for a fat synthesizer lick, and this has one right up front. This was one of the first CDs I owned back in the day. Ah, hair bands… So, anyway, end your week rockin’ what hair you have left as we kick off the weekend! 3… 2… 1…

That tiger was not “left behind.” He was cleverly lured into Jeff’s trap with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Tigers can’t resist those, you know. 😉
In other news: Finally! Explained: where all those Spaceman Spiff fantasies came from. And Calvin just thought Hobbes was making it all up. BWAaaa Haa Haaa ha ha ha!!! Just how awesome is a tiger astronaut?
Oh. Happy Friday the 13th! 👿
BWHAHAHAHAHAH!! Evil indeed. 😛
Man, you’ve hit on my other great fascination besides Italian Rocker Chicks…Estes Rockets!!! I think I’m still on a few watch lists because of the havoc we wreaked back in the day. Thanks, Byron, for a great Friday the 13th!
I’ve flown everything from an A engine to a J engine. J’s are HUGE engines. Took a 5 foot rocket to 1500 feet. Nice.
🙂
BEEG! BEEG BA-DAH BOOM! 😀
i love how you got the launch controller EXACTLY right up there, including the launch key! i used to launch estes rockets as a kid and mine looked pretty much the same (tho it was blue).
I’ve owned and launched Estes since the late ’60s. How could I *not* feature a launch controller at some point?
😛
the $64,000 question here is :
how many rockets did you lose over the course of yer launching “career”?
The simple answer: All of them. And that’s a LOT of rockets.
I launch them until they break or float into a tree or something.
My favorite kit: The Orbital Transport with its tiny little glider on the back. I’ve owned and launched that sucker a MILLION times (12 different kits to be exact) and it’s a fun kit to build and fly.
Now, thats something I’d do…. to the kid, not his toys! [smirk]
Tough talker…that kid would probably do it to you..haha
Or worse… knowing the kids I grew up with…
🙂
“you dang kids stay outta my yard!”
LOL! Exactly.
😛
This is the catalyst that sent that little boy further into the recesses of his imagination and carried him out into space. 🙂
We used to launch and destroy all sorts of things with our model rocket engines. You remember those large Styrofoam planes, the ones that when you throw them they loop back, well those bad boys will really take off with 4 rocket engines attached to them, of course it also bursts into flames and melts in a very exciting way as well. 🙂
I use to put them into model cars and send them shooting down the driveway. Those little 1/2 A engines are a blast and cheap. The pyro in me loves model rocketry.
😛
I strapped one of those engines to one of thos old fashioned steel roller skates and sent it down the road. Our neighbor, the county sheriff, was not amused.
Hahahaha…. poor Calvin!!!!! XD
I didn’t comment this before, but your musical selection is soooo great!!!! It’s as good as the comic itself. 🙂
There are times I will just go through the recent archives and just play the songs. They make some great playlists! I wish I could automate that process, now that would be awesome!
🙂
And thanks!
Puts on his best Muppets announcers voice and shouts:
“Tiggers in Space”!!!
Love it mate! 😀
Hot damn, the Muppets were the best, weren’t they? Pigs In Space was just funny as hell… well, the whole damn show was funny.
😛
Poor Calvin! Poor Hobbes!
For the record, my friend Chris and I used to load up rockets with firecrackers, light the fuse, and watch the rocket blow itself to pieces in mid-air.
Speaking of records, “The Final Countdown” is a 1980s song. Did you scrap the rule about songs only from the ’70s? 🙂
Now *that’s* model rocketry!
I pull songs from just about anywhere now. I try to stick to ’70s stuff, but every so often one sneaks in from the ’60s or ’80s. My first pick was “Ride the Tiger” by Jefferson Starship (from like ’74) but I thought I’d slide in one of my guilty pleasures.
😛
References to 80’s comic strips require 80’s song titles.
DOH! Now that would have been a better answer…
🙂
Well done! Now if only Jeff could find some way to blow up Calvin too… 😛
(But if you ever get the urge to dis Opus the Penguin, violence might ensue across the internets…muhahahaha…)
A challenge is never something to offer to me lightly… I’m silly enough to just about anything…
🙂
Actually, Opus was kinda cool… though I haven’t read it in eons.
I’d never heard of Bloom County or Opus until I met my current Dearly beloved, who had several bound collections, but I was very impressed (for its own merits but also owing to its obvious Doonesbury influence, which will come as no surprise to you).
bloom county ruled. so did opus. at least in my opinion. i still read the old strips and laugh pretty heartily, even tho a lot of the references are horribly dated now. berke breathed has a pretty sharp wit.
the whole deathtöngue story was great. he was pretty brave to take on that subject back then. a heavy metal tuba player! awesome. 😀
hell, a lot of the subjects breathed touched on had to have been solely to push the boundaries. i imagine that he got calls from the syndicate censors on a fairly regular basis. i think that’s a sign that yer doing something right. 😀
The old saying in radio was if you weren’t called into the Program Manager’s office at least once a week, you weren’t doing your job.
Irony.
Helloooo-de-doo de Dee! ~hearts you massive for your BEEG BA-DAH BOOM above, and offers you a meat popsicle and a mul-ti-pass~
Yes, am quite impressed by the sharpth of Mr Breathed’s wit. And the storylines. Sad that he decided to stop, but glad he decided to stop on a high…
Lol! Science is truly amazing xD!
I so want to spoof Mythbusters someday… Maybe Jeff can inspire a young Jamie and Adam…
🙂
YOU MUST DO THIS!!!
Well, doing a little research, Adam was 10 in 1977, but Jamie was 21 and had been hitch-hiking around the country since he was 14. Now, I see a tie-in coming!
😛
Eeeeeeeeeeeeee! ~thoroughly approves~
Ahhh poor tiger! Though it is in the “cat” family so it’s OK!
ArrrOOoo!
