Oh, oh… Bud looks ticked…. So, what is the Loophole that is going to get Bud off the hook? Who could already have his soul? What the hell has Bud been doing to have his soul mortgaged by TWO different entities? Not bad for a boy from the Northside of Chicago! Toon in Monday for the final answer! All will be answered, even if it sucks. It will not be a dream…
🙂
Today’s comic is NUMBER 300 for 1977 the Comic! When I picked up a pencil for the first time in 30 years in 2007 and sketched Bud for the very first time, I had no idea that I’d be here today with all you fantastic readers along for the ride. I’m not typically a sentimental guy and normally a big smart-ass (as you’ve come to know in the comments section) but drawing today’s comic has brought a small tear to my eye. Particularly since I ended up with an 80s band’s song as the title.
At the beginning of 2009 I had written this story of Bud and the gang making it big in the industry. I decided to have Bud, now 50 years old, tell the story to his sole child, the nameless daughter who we’ve seen twice this year. I knew it was a risk taking on such a big story (it really did start last January with a few distractions). But you all have tagged along and have helped form the story with your input and suggestions and occasional nit-pick.
Now that 2009 has come to an end I look back on the year and the only thing that went the way it should was 1977 the Comic. As with most folks in today’s economy the year was not even close to what I wanted. It was extremely stressful for myself and family, but the one thing (besides my three sons) that kept me going was drawing this comic. 2010 looks to be starting off really well as I’ve taken on managing Webcomic Planet, a webcomic listing/promotional website, and I’ve picked up my first new freelance clients in over two years. Joy!
So I wish you and yours a fantastic New Year and hope 2010 brings us all the joy and happiness we all deserve. I have found my happiness here drawing Bud and the gang and sharing them all with you. I have the BEST readers in all of the webcomic industry, and I know I won’t get any arguments on that point! Simply, rock on, man!

Okay, how the hell did I pick a band that formed in 1987 and has NOTHING to do with the 70s? That breaks the big rule for including only songs from the 70s or by groups that were popular in the 70s. Hmmm. Well, today’s comic title is actually a NEW Winger song released earlier this year. I picked it for two reasons. One, the lyrics are just DEAD on to Bud’s dealing with the Devil. All the ups and downs of having made the deal and finding fame and fortune. Two, this song would be a song that OLD Bud would buy and listen to. Come on, the thing just rocks, don’t it? I can even understand the lyrics! So, old Bud (me) decided to make a special exception for comic #300 and put in a NEW rock song that you all should be listening to.

Oh, man, the boobs on Bud. I feel so conflicted. 😀
You should try drawing them. I mean, I’m drawing boobs on a hot woman, but then it’s really Bud. Eh, whatever, he’s still a good lookin’ woman!
😉
“I have the BEST readers in all of the webcomic industry, and I know I won’t get any arguments on that point!” Well speaking for myself, Yes. Some of these other slackers..ha ha j/k
Happy New Year. Looking forward to the ride in 2010. Thanks for your support of my little part of the blogosphere this year.
The term “slackers” always takes me back to “Back to the Future” & the Dean calling Marty that. Cracks me up every time. I’ve known a few Deans of High Schools in my day, and none of them were stellar human beings in their youths…
Glad to help your neck of the woods here on the Internet, that’s what it’s all about… that and the Hokey Pokey…
😉
BRB…turning self around.
Congratulations on #300, that’s such an accomplishment. I’m so ready for 2010 now, Bud always seems to find a way out, but with his soul on the line by two entities somethings gonna catch up to him eventually. I’m ready for the next 300….bring it on.
Thanks. I truly wasn’t counting as it can be very frustrating to watch the numbers go up slowly. When I first started, I was keeping track, but then I’d put in all this work and I would have like only 12 comics done. So, I put away the adding machine and let Nature take its course. Then I was helping out on TGT Webcomics and someone mentioned that their comic started in 2008 (same as 1977) and they were approaching 300 comics. So, I opened up my comics folder and did a count, and WHAM! I was approaching 300 as well. I was stunned to be honest. First, where did the time go? Man, that went by fast! Two, HOLY CRAP that’s a lot of comics for doing them only 3 times a week.
Oh, I could be a wet noodle and state that I really have 350 comics, but I do not count the first 50 I did back in 2007 as they are just not that good. I consider those my “pilot” comics, so to speak! They’re in the Subscriber area and are a tad painful for me to look at, but they are fun.
Anyway, Happy New Year to you too, and I’m ready to bring on the next 300!
🙂
Man, 300 comics. They’ve changed a lot, besides the gender switch. Such as everybody’s hair, everybody’s faces, everybody’s …….. yeah, a lot of changes.
Change in comics is part of the natural progression of the artist as you discover the “feel” for the comic. I started off trying to do more cartoony drawings and it just was not my style. Doing the comics like I do today take a lot longer as I have to get proportions right and all that, but I think they look really good and I can’t imagine what the comic will look like in another 300 comic! At this rate, that will be at the end of 2011…
Holy crap… 🙂
You can’t have it, mean ol’ debbil lady… Bud’s already SOLD HIS SOUL TO ROCK N’ ROLL!
Someone’s on the right track… 🙂
Congrats Byron, & Happy 2010! Man, it sounds weird to say 2010, it only seems a short time ago that folks were freaking out about Y2K, and here that’s already been 10 years – where does the time go?!! Great Winger song by the way. I always liked Winger & felt that they were always unfairly dumped on for some reason. I think of all of the 80’s Hair Bands, they were one of the more talented. In fact, one of my favorite releases from 2009 was an album from Crown Of Thorns – the group headed by Jean Beauvoir, the old Plasmatics guitarist, entitled “Faith”. It sounds very much like it could have been released in the 80’s & I think one of the reasons I like it (besides it being a great album) is that it sounds allot like Winger.
I like Winger’s stuff, but I like anything that rocks like today’s song. So it’s nice to hear some new rock finally!
LOL! Yeah, I remember everyone thinking Y2K was the end of the world as programmers all over the world scrambled to update software. I think they did it on purpose for job security. Do you see the average programmer NOT taking into account the change of the century? I bet they did… Sneaky little bastards they are!
🙂
This is hilarious.Well done on doing 300 all with such quality.
Thanks! And I’m glad to have had you along for the ride too! Happy New Year!
Yes, I could see Bud listening to that, and so VERY appropriate! It started off and I thought, “Yeah, 80’s, whatever” and then I caught myself grinning when the first chorus started. Oops.
(What this storyline suddenly brought to mind today was Sold My Soul off Nazareth’s 1973 Razamanaz. Must admit, I only thought of that because I actually owned it, the second album I ever bought. It doesn’t really fit the story.)
I love the twist in today’s comic. I totally didn’t see that one coming. 🙂
I lied. Razamanaz was not the second album I bought, but the third. Slade’s Slayed, then Status Quo’s Piledriver, then Razamanaz. My parents didn’t totally give up on my sense of taste until the one after that, Queen II.
Oh, Queen II… the most over looked album in rock and roll. Hot damn that is one great album. It still had the rock and roll edge of Queen’s first album, but it showed us the depth of sound that Queen would go on to create in later albums. I think Queen’s first two albums are their best, bar none. For over all sound and good time rock and roll, those albums rank right up there!
*pulls out his Queen II record…*
🙂
Congrats on 300! Well, if it makes you feel any better, Kip Winger played bass for Alice Cooper before Winger made it. So the connection to Alice Cooper (who was a wee bit popular) certainly can be traced to the 70’s! 😉
Ah-ha! The 6 degrees to Kevin Bacon saves my ass! See, so it all works out! Yeah, you could say Alice Cooper was a tad popular in the 70s…
🙂
I hear Alice plays a mean game of golf these days.
Happy new year! But surely ol’ Devil Liz would say ‘Who the *heaven* are you?’ Heheheh…
I’m thinking Bud(ette) has a Plan and doesn’t even know it…
As with most heroes, Bud does not have a clue he’s about to save the day, or even how. He just will, because that’s what protagonists do! Actually, he’s just following the script…
😉
“USE THE FORCE, BUD!” 😀
in this case, its more like “use yer boobs, bud”. 😀
congrats on the 300, byron. and excellent werk thus far. keep kicking ass.
–dee!
Congrats on entering the 300 level, welcome aboard ;0)
I feel like I’ve been accepted at the Country Club! OooO!
Thanks, Dawn! With comic friends like you, the ride has been a lot easier.
🙂
Well done in making it to 300, I should live so long! 😉
LOL
Hmmm, if Bud gets too angry we’ll loose those great boobs! Kind makes you want him to “chill out” and stay just as bouncy as he/she is! 😉
And of course he sold his soul to his band/music, that’s all there is eh?
Here’s to the next 300! Looking forward to the ride!
Bob
Thanks Bob! As the saying goes, all things must come to an end and so must the Road Trip and so goes Bud’s boobs…
You’ll see on Monday! Happy New Year and all that stuff!
🙂
Congratulations on Number 300! Bud’s boobs does have a certain ring to it. Hmmm…
That it does, that it does… 🙂
I should have said this on the lesbian comic.
But man, you fulfilled a frustrated anticipation from seven seasons of Ranma 1/2. So close, so many teasers but never gave in and got with a girl while in girl form.
Also some wild guesses on who has his soul, he just slept with a Succubus, the devil’s daughter got to his soul before she did, the magic frog… sold his soul for rock concert tickets to Cthulu LoL
Ah, yes, everyone seems to have forgotten about the Devil’s daughter. She human? Was she the goat in disguise? Did she ever get the marshmallow out of her hair?
So many questions, too little comics… I think 1977 has a LONG life in front of it just answering the question and situations I’ve set up in the past 300 comics… Like Lorraine’s REAL mother, not her “adapted” one… Things like that!
Good guesses! You’ll find out on Monday!
🙂
It’s easy to be a frequent guest with a host like that. Congratulations on the 300, it’s truly a great achievement, may 2010 be as productive as ever.
Releasing my eyes’ grip on Buds boobs… This soul for success, fame, fortune or talent thing might have worked in them blues days, she ought to have known real rock musicians don’t have a soul to start with. Though I have the feeling Buds matter might be a bit more delicate.
Everyone, cherish your hangovers and have a jolly new year!
LOL! Well, I know a few rockers, and their souls are sold to rock and roll, not the Devil, so I have to agree with you on that. It’s those bloody record company contracts that are the Devil’s tools…
I’m glad to be host to you all and thanks for dropping by! I’ll be here for a while longer it seems!
🙂
I have a feeling that a Buddette left hook might be coming up for Ms. DeVil……..
That would be a nice touch… I’ll see if I can work that in.
🙂
Congrats on 300 and here’s to another 300–Happy New Year!
Same to you, Paul! 🙂
Congrats on #300, Byron! I’m sorry I forgot to say it earlier!
LOL! No problem! Your original post was either very early in the morning or very late in the evening for you, so I can see how it slipped by you the first time… that and Bud’s boobs…
🙂
Just been playing a bit of catchup as I have been off air for a bit… Of course she cant have his soul, we all know he has already sold it (He sold his soul to rock and roll)
