Cats are just sneaky little shits, aren’t they? Our two kittens just suddenly appear out of nowhere and land on my desk or mouse or chair and scare the living crap out of me. Good thing I like cats.
You know that noise your gas stove makes just before it ignites? Yeah, that sparking sound… Poco has the same thing in the back of his throat and it goes “snik” letting you know flames are a comin’! Poor little pussy cat did not know the danger alarm. Bud will be happy.
(Okay, I know some you still probably light your stove with a match, but how much fun would that be for Poco? Come on…)
Yes, this cat now has the fever… “Cat Fever” ala ’70s rock group Fanny. Yes, Fanny. Some of you know of them, but for those of you who don’t, here’s what you need to know: they rocked your socks off. No, the name is not a reference to a butt or a lady’s Va-jay-jay (you crazy Brits) but rather a proper name. Yes, it’s a real name, stop laughing. I have ALL of Fanny’s albums that were released on Reprise records back in the day. If you don’t know Fanny’s music, then go to iTunes and search for their name and you’ll get the compilation album that is worth every dime. Sample a few tunes and you’ll get hooked like I did back in 1971 when I got their first single.

…And immediately afterwards, Poco just goes back to sleep, as if nothing had happened. Quite possibly the funniest part of today’s comic.
In regards to what ‘fanny’ means, I think ‘vagina’ makes sense. You can easily see it as a shortened version of the word. However, Enid Blyton’s famous five meant I knew it as a name /long/ before I knew any other meanings.
And I like comics that are based solely on actions and expressions.
As far as Fanny having a reference to a vagina actually goes by me. I know Brits are into rhyming nicknames, but this one escapes me. I get “Barney” meaning their in trouble… Barney Ruble rhymes with trouble, so Barney. Got that one.
Fanny? Always been a name to me. In 1973 I named our family hound dog Fanny, after the group, and I got odd looks back then when I’d call her name. Who knew…
Close but no cigar, Byron – a barney is a fight/row/argument/spot of bother/dust-up/etc. – in other words, not the state of being in ttrouble but the trouble itself 🙂
The name ‘Fanny’ was both a nickname for ‘Frances’ and a given name in its own right BTW. As far as its provenance as a term for a lady’s er um cellar door, I think it might go back to the novel Fanny Hill (early wannabe porn). The question is more one of how the Yoosayans came to use it as a term for the arse!
I, of course, always acquiesce to your knowledge, but here’s the reason for my confusion… seems it can mean both. Several UK slang sites do list both meanings, but I got it mainly from the film “Ocean’s Eleven” and here’s what Wikipedia states:
“The term “barney”, which has been used to mean an altercation or fight since the late 19th century although without a clear derivation. In the 2001 feature film “Ocean’s Eleven” a character uses the term “barney”, which is claimed to be a rhyme derived from “Barney Rubble” meaning trouble. However, the use of “barney” in this context far precedes the Flintstones cartoon character Barney Rubble and its usage in the movie in a way that is dependent on a 1960s cartoon to get to the meaning of “trouble” is a good example of the ever-changing nature of rhyming slang.”
That’s what I get for listening to a fictional film to get my UK slang definitions…
🙂
Oh my, ‘acquiesce’ – that’s a fancy word for an Illinois farm boy! I suspect that ‘capitulate’ might be more appropriate though 😛
That’s what you get for having a commenter whose first language was Irish/UK English. I must see the modern Oceans films one day, though – they look like fun…
Well, *my* understanding of acquiesce is “to rest without opposition and discontent” which is what I did. I didn’t barney about it… 🙂
Capitulate? Surrender? Never surrender… never give up!
😛
By Grabthar’s Hammer, the man has a point! 🙂
I remember Fanny and originally thought I remembered them as a British Group, but may well have been remembering Girl’s School! And I have a sneaking suspicion I may have even seen them at one stage, but the memory is fading.
Surely Fanny, the group, were making fun of their own name by calling themselves what every bloke thought of them at the time?
😉
I like a girl who can take the p*ss as well as I can, puts me on the same intellectual level! 😉
Always a good start! LOL
Well, Bob, they should have been a British group, they were much more popular there then here in the States. Fanny only meaning butt didn’t get the attention it did over there. But it wasn’t their name that got me hooked, it was their playing. Did it all themselves and they could really kick some butt (heh, butt…).
Man, I wish I had seen them live back in the day. I didn’t really get into the rock concert thing until like ’75 or so, so I missed them. Ugh…
Oh, as rockers, I think these gals could drink most of us under the table. Just saying…
😛
I know you’re a huge fan of Fanny Byron – I’ve seen your website featuring them. I also found out about Fanny early on, but purely by accident & in a roundabout way because of the group, The Grass Roots…. I was a huge fan of the Grass Roots & found out from a friend who was a huger fan – a member of their fan club no less, that they were going to be on the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. I hadn’t watched the S&C show yet – it was a brand new show in the summer of ’71 & on opposite of something else that we watched on Sundays if I remember right, but I managed to convince the parents to watch S&C instead, tuned in to catch the GR, & it turned out that I was a week early – the show featured Fanny instead. They played “Charity Ball”, & I was impressed enough that the next day I peddled to my favorite record store & asked about them. They not only knew who I was talking about & had their latest release – the Charity Ball lp, but their 1st one as well! I bought them both & was a fan from that day on (probably the only one in New Mexico….)
Their appearance on S&C was early in the 1st season & probably not too many people in this neck of the woods saw it, as I’d never met or run across anyone else who knew who they were until I happened on you & 1977. (I did tune in to S&C the next week & caught the Grass Roots by the way.)
Yeah, that Sonny & Cher video is up on the http://www.fannyrocks.com/ website. I cleaned it up and found a version that had the intro and outro with Phyllis Diller (!). What weird things we have on our TV shows… then and now.
You sound just like me. I heard “Charity Ball” on WLS 890AM here in Chicago (where it was a decent hit) and picked up the single. Mowed some more lawns, and picked up their first album and the Charity Ball album at the same time. I was hooked.
I tucked my albums away after college and got them out to test my newly repaired turntable back in the late 90s and Fanny was the first albums to be played. I then actually digitized them (a real pain back in the day) and converted them to CDs for the car. Was very pleased they put out the Rhino compilation CD back in like 2002 or so. I’ve been in heaven ever since.
Yeah, it was my tiny little Fanny webpage back in the day that got the notice of both Alice and Nickey. Been friends ever since. Imagine having 70s rock stars as your good buds… I still fan struck with them now and then, especially when the old stories unfold. What a hoot!
🙂
burn kitty, BURNNNNNN.
I’m a dog person, can ya tell?
Score one for Poco… never mess with a fire breathing lizard, man…
🙂
Yes, I’m a dog person too…
The more I see of Poco, the more I think of the small swamp dragons in Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld” cycles which are bred as house-pets and pedigree show creatures. Bloody dangerous pets, as they too breathe fire or even explode at unpredictable intervals or if alarmed. Could I borrow shots of Poco to illustrate our Terry Pratchett Wiki? full namechecks and a link to 1977 will be provided! Thanks!

Sure, go ahead! I’d be honored! A good friend of mine used to edit Pratchett’s newsletter or something along that lines, so I’m semi-familiar with his works.
You’re going to find out, well, not for a few weeks yet, how Poco came to sneeze fire. 🙂
Sample artwork uploaded and full credit and link given! Thanks, Byron!
Oh, the link is:

Very cool! Thank you very much. I’ve posted the page on the 1977 Facebook page and Tweeted it out. I’ll have to dig into that Wiki website a bit further now that I know about it.
OH, this is one of my favorites with Poco. The other being the one you shared at the Wiki site. 🙂
