Today’s comic itself is funny in that Bud and Jeff get the Professor and Timmy stoned, and Timmy is going to “turn on” his father as well.
The REAL joke is that the father is Timothy Leary. Now, a good joke need not be explained, but I am told that you “youngsters” out there are not “hip” to who/what Timothy Leary is. In the 1960s, he was a college professor who got his students high on LSD. “He takes you for trips around the Bay… Timothy Leary” is a lyric to a Moody Blues song about Timothy. His famous line is “turn on, tune in, drop out” and he encourage anyone to take LSD and other psycho-drugs. It is true he had a son, and that somewhere around 1957 Mr. Leary went for some of his first “trips”… so this is semi based on fact too. History lesson over.
I never did any hard drugs as my imagination is already pretty vivid and I don’t need to bend it any further. Also, a lead guitarist for the last band I was in dropped some acid and proceeded to “lose” his legs while driving 80mph on the highway with ME as a passenger. I had to push his foot off the accellerator to push the brake. Then I beat the hell out of him as I tossed him into the back seat. The band broke up shortly after that. Wonder why?
So, Bud and Jeff are responsible for turning on Timothy Leary. That’s the joke.
