Today’s entry has been inspired by the ENORMOUS potholes in the roads of northern Illinois this winter. We’ve had a lot of snow, thus a lot of plowing and salt being put down, but these things are ridiculous!!
It is often joked that Illinois has the worst roads in the lower 48, but WOW this is bad. I have driven from coast to coast at various times in the past 25 years and I can tell EVERY time when I enter Illinois the difference in the roads.
Well, today’s entry not only makes fun of potholes, but Hondas as well. My friend Ted (who Chet is based on) had one of these tiny little cars. Now, he was 6 feet 6 inches tall and a good sized man, so this tiny car barely fit him, let alone both of us. Our shoulders practically touched the windows in the doors as we drove around packed into this car! 🙂
I told you I had to re-read!
I had a 79 civic when I was in school. The joke was I could pick it up and carry it to class with me! And yes, that’s what it was like in pot holes!
Hey David! Ted actually did pick up the back of the car. I mean he got the rear up like a couple inches! Totally hilarious. We also took it through one of those commuter tunnels that lets pedestrians walk under the train track next to a viaduct. Imagine meeting a car while walking through one of those!
The Honda met an early death one snowy/icy day here in Chicago. I believe it got rear ended which nearly destroyed it anyway, then the cop that responded to the call couldn’t stop and then totaled the car. Explain THAT to your insurance company!
😀
I have to admit it was a great car. It got fantastic milage and I could park it anywhere! Idiots that take up two spots at the mall? No problem!
Like everyone at that age, my friends and I would play jokes on each other. One day they got together, picked up my Civic, and carried it onto the football feild. They said it only took 6 of them, but I wonder…
Another friend had these cast-iron cannons – we’d go up in the hills on the last day of school and blow our books to confetti (I hope my kids aren’t reading this!). We loaded the cannons into the back of the Civic, and wouldn’t you know, driving up hills the back end was heavier than the front! I had to ‘bounce’ around corners!
I miss my car…
***SIGH***
My first car was a 1981 Civic. All through college I would take it offroading. I always knew if it got stuck, I could lift it, or call a friend and the two of us could lift it out of trouble.
Just found the Comic, and am really enjoying it so far!!
Welcome to the Legions of New Readers of 1977! You’re one of many, many new readers and I’m glad to have you along for the ride!
My friend’s Civic was a ton of fun. Yeah, he could pick the back end up by himself. Great for bar bets.
Welcome to the Party, Pal! Enjoy the rest!
🙂
haha, awesome comic man, just started it today
The front end of that Civic looks more like the post-1980 one… I’m not sure it’s actually possible to capture how little the earlier models actually looked. A friend who owned one described it as “The world’s first disposable car… drive it for two years and throw it away.” I owned an ’81, which was the first year they were anything like a real car.
Loving the comic, though!
Well, my friend was 6’6″ tall and weight a good 240 pounds or so and I was 6′ and about 150 pounds and we filled the front of that car completely. In the winter time it was shoulder to shoulder, window to window. Tight fit.
Glad you like the comic! Welcome to the party, pal!
