Oh what wicked tales do I weave now? Is that the same type hat Robyn is wearing in current times? Oh my… And never, ever mess with guys in jail who are wearing ABBA shirts. They are mean SOBs. And boxer shorts? Holy crap! All types of stuff flying around in this story! Hang on, it’s heating up quickly.
Oh, CLICK HERE to see that comic where Lorraine starts her “kissing fund”.
One of the things I like about telling the 1977 stories from Old Bud’s perspective is this type of interaction I can have. The daughter commenting and being able to zip through some boring story stuff in a nice, fun fashion.
As for today’s song, I don’t often get on my soap box about a rock group, but as a die-hard Fanny fan, I on occasion have to bring them up. Yes, yes, they were the first all female rock band (edit: signed to a major record label) … but that’s not why I like them (though it helped). This band rocked your socks off. They were great musicians, great writers and even nicer people.

$5,000 at $10 a kiss? Not bad at all.
And boy are ABBA fans touchy.
SCARY GUY IN SCARIER SHIRT: “Waterloo lookin’ at, Fern?”
BUD: o_O “… Fern?”
SGiSS: “I decided I’m gonna call you ‘Fern.’ ”
BUD: “Why?”
SGiSS: “As in ‘Fern, ‘and over your your stash an’ your cash.”
BUD: “But the cops took all that!”
SGiSS: “Then I guess I’m gonna have to collect yer rent some other way…”
21st CENTURY BUD: “Looking back on it, the beat-down wasn’t as painful as the ABBA puns.”
(edited to add in stage directions — first attempt mistook them for meaningless HTML)

BUD: o_O “… Fern?”
SGiSS: “I decided I’m gonna call you ‘Fern.’ ”
BUD: *gulp* “Why?”
SGiSS: “As in ‘Fern, ‘and over your your stash an’ your cash.”
BUD: “But the cops took all that!”
SGiSS: “Then I guess I’m gonna have to collect yer rent some other way…” *smacks fist into palm*

Oh, and is it very wrong of me to hope the sexy cop scores?
After all, just because Bud says they never found out why doesn’t mean that Robin didn’t. She just might have decided she didn’t want the guys pestering her for details, pictures, repeat performances…
Hey, a man can dream.
While probably not as huge a Fanny fan (the group, the group!) as you are Byron, I too, really liked them after having discovered them very early, on the Sonny & Cher show (I relayed that story as a comment to one of the strips back in the archives somewhere…), so I have been a fan as long, if not longer, than you… BUT, I have to comment on the “Yes, yes, they were the first all female rock band…”.
While they were ONE of the first, there were several before them, & I’m talking all female bands who wrote, played instruments, performed their own music, were signed to labels, & relaesed albums or singles – not the “girl groups” who featured female singers backed by studio musicians, like the Supremes or the Shirelles.
The first true “rock” female band that I know of was Goldie & the Gingerbreads from 1962, fronted by Goldie Zelkowitz – later to become Genya Raven, who fronted a largely unknown, excellent 70’s horn band called Ten Wheel Drive, and later made a splash in the punk scene, pretty much infuencing all the ensuing rocker gals like the Runaways, Debra Harry, Cristie Hynde, etc.
The Brits also clocked in early – 1963, with The Liverbirds. They never acheived much success outside of England except for Germany, where they went & performed like alot of their male Brit invasion contemporaries did, but they were there early, too. Another notable of the “firsts” was The Pleasure Seekers from 1964, who included Patti & Suzi Quatro, Suzi latter to have a successful solo carrer, & Patti went on to join Fanny breifly. There were others who didn’t get major label deals like The Heatbeats, The Moppets, and The Shaggs, but were playing & recording before Fanny. Just sayin’…
To add to your musicology notes: the producer Richard Perry had been er um Involved With Goldie?Genya back in the very-long-ago and that was what inspired him in the very late ’60s to seek out and find a good young all-female band called Wild Honey, who eventually became Fanny. And the wheel goes round and around…
It’s now stuck in my head, so I give it to you now as well! [smirk]
Come and knock on our door….. We’ve been waiting for you…… Where the kisses are hers and hers and his, Three’s company too. Come and dance on on our floor…… Take a step that is new…..
Far too much going on all at once for me to comment on it all. 😀 Comments today are just as rich … I’m having a hard time typing because I’m laughing so hard.
But, Jeff looks really worried about who was filling out those boxer shorts there must be some residual images flashing through his sub-conscious. Who knew Robyn would pick up a police chick as part of her fan club? 😉
And, ABBA …. scary scary cult following …
Fan club”? Now there’s a euphemism for yez… 😉
oh oh oh! The ABBA t-shirt! Bud’s HUGE eyes in that panel! And the Boxers of Mystery! (Thanks be feck that neither of the Plan 9 boys were graceless and fashion-impaired enough to wear ~retches~ boxers, whew.)
This strip is mega. Looking forward to the reveals…
You know ABBA was used in some countries as torture thought they used homemade knives must be one cleaver immate. Bud should have turned to Buddet and have bigger guy save him/her. But you can count on Robyn the Irish lesbian toy for horny cops to save the day so Rocky pays the bail. I know those boxers aren’t mine my shorts are shorter and not off white yeck.
