We start Bud’s story of Plan 9’s lost weekend and how they end up wanted by the FBI. This film noir cover is based on “The Lost Weekend” which is a 1945 film directed by Billy Wilder and starring Ray Milland and Jane Wyman (a former Mrs. Ronald Regan). I occasionally get the motivation to draw noir comic style and if I had more time I’d do more of these type drawings.
Some catch up business today! The winner of “What’s Bud’s Name?” contest is Vince LoGreco with his entry of “Charles Hardin Chambers”. Now, the deciding factor was his reason WHY… Charles Hardin was Buddy Holly’s real name, thus the Chambers family would soon start calling their only son by Holly’s pseudonym as Buddy Holly and the Crickets gained national fame later in 1957 (the year Bud was born). Not only am I a Buddy Holly fan (come on, who isn’t?) but thought that was a cool background for Bud’s name. So, look for Vince as an FBI agent coming up soon!
Speaking of Buddy Holly, how about a little “That’ll Be The Day” from 1957. It’s amazing the influence Holly had on rock and roll in his shortened career. I can only imagine the great works he would have created had he lived. If you love rock, then you gotta tip your hat to Holly, plain and simple.

its got my interest π and thats a pretty nice upgrade… and background! heheh
Well, if Lorraine’s involved, either she’s (in large part) responsible for the “lost” portion of the weekend (in which case it’s gone forever, since I have faith in our gal Doing It Right) – or – she has enough memory of the event(s) to help with “enough” reconstruction to tell an epic story.
But, that applies to all of our heroes in one way or another, so I’ma buy me a large bowl of popcorn and settling in.
The black and white film noir take for this cover is outstanding. Maybe when you get to the back cover there will be a shot of the cast in a similar style? I would assume you’re familiar with Brooke McEldowney’s 9 Chickweed Lane and Pibgorn. As I scrolled (luxuriously) down the image, Lorraine’s pose & look struck me as very Drusilla-like.
Carry on! π
I must say great job on the cover as I can truly see this is going to be some mystery/fun in 1977. π
NOIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahem.
Looks FANTASTIC, sir! As does your new set-up.
So start the vintage 1940s-style virtual cinecams rolling and let’s rock…
Liking the film noir look here. The black and white is a very nice touch.
You know, now I want to see alternate universe versions of our main characters the way they’d look had they been the age we usually see them in 1966, 1955, etc. — full stories would probably be too much to ask, but just wallpapers or pinups, maybe? Imagine how good 1922 Lorraine would look in flapper gear…
The crew looks young once again. Did they pull a Benjamin Button?
A noir comic in “1977”? Nice!
It’ll be like Dashiell Hammett with doobies.
Cool, I won!!! Thanks for picking my entry!
