The belt sander getting away from the operator and running down the floor or hallway has been done many a time for sure… and like a pie to the face, I laugh every time I see it, but I wanted something a little different for Bud. He’s been putting people in harm’s way all week so today he’s doing what he’s good at: soldering. Only thing at risk is his finger prints.
Doing a spin-off comic featuring Poco and the squirrels seems more and more inviting everytime I put him into the comic. He’s just fun to draw too. Stay tooned…
What can one say about 1971’s “Surf’s Up” album by the Beach Boys. One expected their trademark beach-sound of the 60s and got an earful of a really outstanding and dramatic song. But, we wanted “I Get Around” not a masterpiece! Brian Wilson was/is a genious only to be haunted by the very things that drive his creative juices. I am a huge Beach Boys fan and saw them twice with Chicago in 1975. 4 hour concert with two super groups. I don’t remember either of them, but they tell me they were great…

I love ‘Surf’s Up’ – one of my fav Beach Boys albums. The last 2 Brian Wilson songs (‘Till I Die’ and ‘Surf’s Up’) are absolutely sublime. The rest is good too although I could probably do without ‘Student Demonstration Time’ but hey, every good album has a ‘skipper’.
Brian and John Phillips are probably the best vocal arrangers there have ever been.
What exactly is that being soldered? If I was to guess, I’d say he was doing something he wasn’t supposed to…
reminds me of the belt sander races they used to show on tv a while back. heh i used to turn them upside down and make pipes with them
I still say it’s funny if it hits someone (front and center, Chet!) on the bridge of the nose, the crotch or the side of the noggin just above the ear. :o)
I see what you did with the depth of field in panel three.
Dunno if I like the f32 effect, to be honest, but it was clever.

Like they say about the ’60’s, if you remember it you probably weren’t there, I say – if you remember the ’70’s, you probably were there, but just not enjoying it enough! 😉
Saw the Beach Boys once way back early ’70’s, on tour in the UK, they were great! At least, I think it was them, and I’m pretty sure I was there, and I know they were great. Any witnesses? I may need some help here….

Man, Byron, I’m jealous as hell! I’d probably have given my left one to see Beach Boys/Chicago on that ’75 “Beachago” tour… I had a high school classmate buddy who went to Oakland about a week & a half before we graduated that spring & saw them, & that was all he could talk about that whole summer! For me, that tour marked the pinnacle for both the Beach Boys & Chicago – the last good year for the Beach Boys before Brian Wilson’s downward spiral into drugs & paranoia, band legal troubles & inner dissensions tore them apart, & for Chicago the last decent album before the death of Terry Kath. After ’75, both bands produced largely audio pablum as far as I’m concerned…
Last summer I was refinishing some floors in my house. Here’s my procedure for changing the belt:
1. Switch off belt sander.
2. For added safety, unplug sander.
3. Remove old sanding belt.
4. Install new belt.
5. Switch sander on.
6. Realize I forgot to plug sander back in.
7. Plug in sander.
8. Realize that I forgot to turn switch off before plugging back in; watch sander race across floor and crash into wall.
I went through three @#$%&! sanders by the time I was done.
That’s the only problem with being a young…well okay, I’m almost 30 so let’s change that, relatively young rock fan. You miss all the awesome concerts. 😛
I like how Poco is sharply defined and the humans are all soft-focusy in the background. Nice little cinematic touch there.

RE: Kevin – Well, I didn’t try too hard, but Bud has a small circuit board in a clamp, so it may look a little weird. When soldering, you always clamp the part as you’ll burn your finger prints off otherwise.
RE: 11 in 1977 – Yes, I have clamped belt sanders in a big talbe clamp so I can use them as a “table” sander… kinda stupid but that’s what home improvement accidents are all about…
RE: roxysteve – I like to play with depth of field now and then. Particulary when I want the foreground to be the focal point. I may have gone a tad over on the blurring though… eh, I’m old…

RE: unclemac – Yeah, I was lucky to have seen them in the Chicago Stadium. They sold out SIX days straight (a record back then) and I say them Saturday night, the last night. Then I saw them about a month later as they stolled through Illinois State University one night. ISU had a reputation for booking the best damn rock bands and this tour was one of the best ever. I’d tell you more about them… but… 🙂

RE: Rhiberri – No offense, but to anyone over 50, 30 is young. I could be your Dad… but the 70s did have some fantastic tours. Stadium rock concerts really came to full bloom in my era and they were great. The UK really knocked out some BIG ass concerts… and LOUD ones too… Deep Purple coming to mind as holding the record for loudest concert ever I believe at one point. But at least you have your hearing… 🙂
