Been a messed up week. First the holiday on Monday threw my brain off and I truly thought that Wednesday was Tuesday, thus I did the comic THAT day instead of the correct day, so Wednesday’s comic posted Thursday. Jeez. Then, over the long weekend, my 8 year old Dodge Caravan blew up its SECOND transmission in 165,000 miles. Now, maybe that’s not all that bad, but still sucks the big one. So, needless to say I’m not dropping $3000 on a 9 (model) year old car. So, I’m sharing my wife’s car. Thrills. Feel like I’m in High School “Hey, can I borrow the car?”
So, I’m a bit behind, but I also know a lot of folks comment that they like my sketch versions of the comics, so I’m putting this up for the moment. I will do up the comic in normal fashion and update it here. Then I’ll post a link to this rough sketch here… and here’s the pencil layer ready to be inked.
So, the old lady was Lorraine’s mom! And now, does Lorraine go seek her out or just leave it alone? Hmmm… In the meantime, Robyn finds a new job on Monday as we let Lorraine think about if she’s gonna go meet her Momma or not. Great twist, dude! The hair color similarity kinda struck me last strip, but I didn’t connect the dots between the faces. I think part of it was panel #3, the tearful, open-eyed look on Lorraine distracted from the similarities.
You know that saying about loving something and letting it go? And, if it comes back it’s all cool & junk but, if it doesn’t come back … I might be going out on a limb here, but I’m betting that Lorraine is more the hunt it down and murder it to death type. I’m seeing an EPIC confrontation in my crystal ball, hopefully involving a mother-daughter catfight in wet T-shirts … 😈

Well, I’ve been trying to make a conscious effort to distinguish my female characters. Seems I’ve drawn a small amount of criticism over my making them all the same except for the hair styles & clothes (Isn’t that what cartooning is all about though?). And I wanted Lorraine’s mom to be a skinny, wrinkled version of Lorraine.
I think you’re on to something with the confrontation comment. Yeah, you don’t scream at Lorraine in Italian and expect her to leave it alone. We’ll be seeing more of “the old lady” soon enough!

Interestingly enough, I found out yesterday (by random chance) that there’s a new (?) USA telly series called Life Unexpected, which goes from the premise that an adolescent (female) who was applying to be an ’emancipated minor’ has to track down her biological parents to sign the paperwork, and ends up bonding with her birth mother. I think it’s meant to be a serious drama, though…
I think I’ve heard of it, but I watch very little Broadcast Television outside of NASCAR and the Cartoon Network. Most of it is total crap.

Heh, as a Broadcast Professional for for over 30 years who has worked Network News, yes, you are technically correct. But today, the term “broadcast” has taken on so many different meanings that confining it to “over the air” is not the current definition (in my opinion). This opens a big can of worms, so suffice to say, in a strict definition, you are correct.

“I’m from Iowa… I only work in outer-space…” has forever been stuck in my head since I first saw Star Trek IV. Being Iowa’s neighbor, I have to say there is nothing wrong with Iowa. Having visited the Quad Cities many times in my life and actually spent time in Des Moines as well, I have to say Iowa is quite enjoyable. Like Illinois, it seems to be made of nothing but corn fields. Imagine that?
But, having grown up on a farm for a short period of my life, I have come to love the swaying corn fields. Very relaxing and a great place to drink and smoke.

No wonder Lorraine subconsciously dyed her moms hair the same color as her own. Her mom hadn’t gone back to that color as it was a painful reminder of her long lost daughter…ok I am reading way to much into this and need to move on..haha

No matter where I see them and in whatever contexts, photo lockets always make me think of the backside of the Alice Cooper “Dada” album (it has a photo locket with two pictures; Alice in his high school years and a crazy-looking old man who’s probably meant to be the Former Lee Warmer character from the album).
So I’m guessing you get your Avatar name from that album too? A wild guess on my part…

Finally made it through the archives, comics and comments and attachments alike! You’ve grow tremendously in your artistic ablities and your characters (women included) have truly developed into unique personalities and, well, Charaters! I’m loving where your going and thoroughly enjoy the music, music trivia, and memories you’ve shared, as well as those of your dedicated fans. I am not a child of the 70’s but still have my parents collection of vinyl, which is about 300 strong, and covers most everything but rock and roll. ~sigh~
Now back to hunting up more classics in flea markets, good will, yard sales, trash bins…..
