Okay, I did A LOT this weekend, even a Sunday comic for Easter and I just ran out of steam and time. I will update this comic at some point Monday, but until then at least we all have this. Actually, in a more finished form, I would not mind this format. I am a sketch artist… I’z lovez me pencil drawings. I’m not hinting even the slightest that 1977 will go in this direction, I’m just passing along that I enjoy the pencil versions.

Oh, the title… a little old group out of London town back in the mid-70s calling themselves Japan. Say what, gov’nor? Anyway, they released their first album in 1978, but their 3rd album was appropriately titled for today’s comic. I did some research on songs about Polaroids, and they were either a tad filthy, or really, really depressing as in Alice Cooper’s 1978 song called “Quiet Room” which indeed does mention Polaroids he’s put up in the “quiet room” where he contemplates killing himself. Happy tune, there, Alice old boy! Eek… But, I liked this one and went with it!

What about Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome”, from the “Rhymin’ Simon” album?
That was the original title of the comic, but technically that’s talking about Kodak film and being a semi-pro photographer myself, it bugged me as Polaroids and Kodak are two different film types. Lorraine uses Polaroids as many people did in this time period, so I went hunting for Polaroid songs.
Though the Paul Simon song is toe-tapper and was censored on AM radio when he sang the line “When I think of the crap I learned in High School…” There’d be this silence most of the time where the word “crap” had been cut out. Ah, the good old days where “crap” was considered a “dirty” word and couldn’t be said on the radio. Thank you George Carlin for clearing that up!

As I recall, both “shit” & “crap” were part of a Carlin bit that actually preceded his famous “7 Words You Can’t Say on Television” routine. Since they’d already gotten a fair amount of “play”, he didn’t give them all that much time in the “7 Words” bit.
Thank you for the edits! I type too fast sometimes, and to be honest, not much on details sometimes. I was always called a lazy “A” student by friends and teachers. Damn straight.
Yes, Carlin has a great routine on the word “shit” (called “shoot” on the album) and how it compared to crap on his “FM & AM” album. And the actual seven words list did NOT include crap, oddly enough. I will not get into Carlin’s list here as kids do drop by to look at Lorraine’s boobs… By kids I mean most males between 12 and 102…
Also, if you listen to the album that contains George’s list (Class Clown), the rest of the album could be played on the radio with little or no editing outside of that single routine. Odd, as in his later years, that was NOT the case.

Gentlemen Take Polaroids is a great album, one of my faves. I used to blast it while driving my TR6 all over England with the roof down (once getting mild frostbite as a result). Definitely worth a listen, especially for the bass playing both on the title track and “swing”. Very Chris Squire-like. Not an unbent, unslid note in sight.
But it came out in the 80s, not the 70s. It was a great antidote to the endless synth bands of its time, and had a very end-of-the-70s feel with its lush production.

And your Know-it-all Gland was working very well indeed. My only cavet for using titles is that the group or song have some sort of link to the 70s era… kinda like the 6 degrees to Kevin Bacon game.
And in this case the band had formed in 1974 and their first album came out in 1978. The only reason I know of the band is my Googling songs with Polaroid in the lyrics or titles. I am going to try and dig up some recordings on the band as they sound up my alley!
Hey Byron, as long as you’re being called on the carpet for lyrics, I’m gonna have to take exception to DMC_Run’s edit to you… The opening lyrics for “Kodachrome” are: “When I think (back on all) the crap I learned in high school…” Japan was a great band (at least I liked them with my very wide-ranging tastes) & they did have a great bass player in Mick Kern. Japan influenced the 80’s Euro Synth Pop sound and acts like Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, and Gary Numan, etc., allot. If you liked them, you’ll probably like Japan.

RE: Kevin – LOL! The female readers may take exception to this, but I have to agree. I’ve gotten yelled at for doing things that my wife does… what? Yes, one of the things I learned very early in life having three older sisters is that their moods can change in a second. Even outside of when “the painters had arrived.”
But to Lorraine’s credit, Bud acted like a typical guy and did it to excess. Can you blame him? Nope.
