There is a bit of Chicago legend for us Cub fans on one fateful day in 1983 when the Cubs started off the season 5-14 and only about 3000 “fans” showed up everyday (Bud and Jeff would be there for sure). Here’s what was said, uncensored, by Cubs manager Lee Elia in 1983:
“Fuck those fuckin’ fans who come out here and say they’re Cub fans that are supposed to be behind you, rippin’ every fuckin’ thing you do. I’ll tell you one fuckin’ thing, I hope we get fuckin’ hotter than shit, just to stuff it up them 3,000 fuckin’ people that show up every fuckin’ day, because if they’re the real Chicago fuckin’ fans, they can kiss my fuckin’ ass right downtown and PRINT IT.”
He was bit unhappy, no? 😛 So, that’s what inspired me to do this with just Bud and Jeff in the stands. Also, easier to draw.

Trivia: the boy who played Don Henley as a young man in the music video for this song lived in Warrenville, Illinois and came by my office one day to have the video copied. He had a head-shot and signed it for me. Was kinda cool. I’m one degree from Don Henley man…

Also, The Boys of Summer is one of my fave songs liek evar. Especially because it sounds like a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song. Not surprising, considering the Heartbreaker-y presence in its creation 😀

That whole album was just one good song after another. I picked it up on the strength of a couple of singles, figuring it had to be worth a shot, and was really suprised just how good the rest of the songs were.
I know! Couldn’t believe that kid lived in my town. Small world indeed.
Yes, the album is something you can put on and not skip a track. I’m not a big Henley fan, but that is one great album. I think one of the last vinyl LPs I ever bought too…

We skinny musician types have no body fat as we don’t eat much. Drink and smoke, yes. Also, if you’ve never lifted a Marshall stack before, you’d know it is a workout. PA speakers, amps, cables, drum kits, guitars, stands… this stuff all adds up and makes for about 100 trips to the vans/cars for all the gear. It’s a workout alright…

I’m jealous! Not being from & living in a major sports market like LA, NY, Chicago, Dallas, etc., I never had the option of whiling away an afternoon at the ballpark, working or not. While like you Byron, I’m not a big sports fan (especially pro sports), I do have a soft spot for baseball, & must make due with my hometown Isotopes – the Marlins AAA affiliate from start-up in ’03 to ’09, then back with the Dodgers beginning last year (our original AAA club, the Dukes was the Dodgers farm team from ’63-’01). Great choice for the strip today – I love “Boys of Summer”, great song & great album. Henley can be a bit of a prima donna, but a talented guy I must admit.
