Growing up on farms here and there in Illinois, I did ride horses from time to time. I’m no expert by a long shot, but I had my fun. In this amazing shot from like 1965 or so, if we had video recorders back then, you would have seen me thrown from the horse as she darted for a fence. Seems she was pregnant and no one bothered to tell the sweet little child on her so when I nudged her with my heels, I got tossed by good. Note I’m not wearing a shirt too. Screaming followed shortly thereafter as I’m a total wuss when it comes to pain. I was knocked off one other horse, this time in high school on a quarter horse as he decided it was time to eat and darted for the barn door, which was not tall enough for us both. He even raised his back as he went in to complete the knock down. I was getting ready to jump anyway, but still felt the siding of the barn completely. I stuck with cars after that.

“Back in the Saddle” is from Aerosmith’s 1976 album “Rocks” The follow up to “Toys in the Attic” was not quite the huge hit they were hoping for and “Saddle” is one of the better tunes off the album. I like it’s grungy sound and of course the rockin’ bass line. Any song featuring a horse whiney and cracking whips is cool with me. Apparently the group tried to use real whips to create the whip crack sounds. They only cut themselves and ended up using mic cables and cap guns to simulate the sound. A leather belt folded in half and snapped together will also make a great whip crack sound. Silly them…

Amd here I was thinking of Gene and the Sons of the Pioneers…. but with the Acapulco gold reference you could have gone to Dr. Hook with “Acapulco Goldie”. I think you would find most of the “primo” weed of the time pales compared to the super weeds of today, what will all the scientifically grown herbs.
Yeah a lot of ponies are mean little beasties, people think they are cute and suitable for kids because of their size, but I’ve met a few Shetlands with some vicious habits, like “lets see if you will rub off on this fence”, or “let’s see what you taste like”, just the thing to turn kids off riding.
If you work with a horse on a daily basis, they can be really cool animals, but you gotta remember they weigh, what, a freakin’ ton? Not like a dog you can push down. So, respect is the key. Love horses, but they have a mind of their own at times.
But, where would we be today without horses pulling our fat asses across this country in the old days? Who would deliver the mail? Some guy? Nope, a horse running it’s ass off all damn day and night. Now that’s what I call cool!

Bud rides again. I remember as a kid getting my picture done a lot on horses, I always thought growing up that folks just had horses hanging around. It wasn’t uncommon in the little town in the Texas Panhandle I grew up in to see someone riding their horse to the corner store, etc. It was the 80’s and we still had hitchin’ posts around the main store cause folks still used them.
When I saw the title “Back in the Saddle” I immediately thought of Gene Autry “Back in the Saddle Again”, but figured it being 1977 that wasn’t the image you aimed to stir. 🙂
I’m amazed at how many folks went for Gene Autry on this one. It’s also amazing how WELL known that song is compared to Aerosmith. True testament to the song’s staying power.
But yeah, a rock and roll comic is NOT going for Autry type stuff. Now, the William Tell Overture is another story!

The “real whip sounds” thing worked for Judas Priest on the song “Metal Gods…” but then, Rob Halford knew his way around leatherware. He just whooooshed the doubled-over whip through the air, rather than trying to crack it in the studio.
Funny sidenote: the clanking of the metal army’s robot footsteps was made by repeatedly dropping a drawer full of silverware on a counter. The album was recorded in Ringo Starr’s home studio, and various bits of “home-made” flourishes found their way onto that album… in my opinion, the Priest’s best effort ever.
Yes, Rob knew leather better than most of thought… and nothing wrong with that. 🙂

Grooveshark is cool, huh? I always that using it would be perfect for the titles of your strips, but I don’t wanna tell a man how to do his business. 😀
hey – I know that feeling of hitting the side of the barn when the horse goes sour … umm … tech question- is there a way to turn OFF grooveshark?? those of us still in the hinterlands that only have access to dialup can’t get yer page to load cause it bogs down my (EXTREMELY speedy) 50.2k line …. *sigh* no probs till you put the streaming sound up ….
